Clean Repetition

Clean Repetition for Players

  • I project my endowment onto the other person

  • I receive every reaction from the other person through the filter of my endowment

  • this happens on both sides simultaneously

Warning

That’s all you have to do – nothing else, really!

Optimal Flow

  • something happens

  • one is realizing it

  • one is experiencing it

  • one is articulating it in the clean repetition structure

facilitate the moment into optimal flow by:

Rhythm & Flow

Warning

Big mistake of actors doing Meisner technique: They try to change it on every repetition

  • If you want to change it because you feel bored, it is wrong.

  • Just keep the repetition going back and forth until the other person does sth. inadvertedly, subconsciously.

  • You notice and express that very moment to the other.

  • You are not sitting there thinking “okay, I am getting bored with this, I should change it”.

  • Again, you are not working from the boredom inside of you, instead you should work from the subtle, subconscious, unplanned accidents happening on the other side.

  • Yes, this requires concentration.

  • It’s just repeating, observing those special moments to happen and name them.

  • if nothing happens: something happens (say “repeat until it sinks in and I realize what it does to me”)

  • if one part. is not realizing it: note one or other that sth. has happened / is happening

  • if one is not experiencing it (“no, there wasn’t anything”): ask the other

  • if other doesn’t realize what happened over there: state strong POV to one or both; “true or false?”

    • false: articulate provocatively situation to one side, for instance: “A: No, I don’C experience anything. P Fac. to B: So, you are dealing with stonewall, what’s that like?” –> start repetition from reaction (something happens)

    • true: start repetition from there (something happens) –> “Angry? True/false? True –> I am angry at you. –> repetition”

  • option: new moment (“what is true right now?”)

Summary

What is the primary focus of the facilitator?

get both sides to realize experience and articulate what’s going on (Optimal flow)

What’s the goal?

as soon as a new truth sparks, the repetition must change (to reveal the truth; “hey, is this a circular process?”)

How?

observe physical, experience (incl. interpretation), structure

Warning

Thou shall not control the dynamic as the facilitator.

Clean Repetition Structure

feeling:

  • Physical observation: You have lips.

  • Interpretation I: You are smiling.

  • Interpretation II: You are smiling at me.

  • Feeling stage: You are happy

  • Relationship to me: You are happy because of me.

action:

  • Physical observation: You are leaning forward.

  • Interpretation I: You are approaching. / You are attacking.

  • Interpretation II: You are approaching me. / You are attacking me.

  • Feeling stage: You’re comfortable. / You’re angry.

  • Relationship to me: You’re comfortable with me. / You’re angry with me.

Note how we advance with each step towards a stronger and more personal POV.

Cutting out softeners

I am a little upset. -> You make me furious.
